"Noticeably Different, Noticeably Better" A CSR Business Case Study: Texas Disposal Systems

The Texas Disposal Systems (TDS) case study introduces students in Organizational Behavior and Leadership courses to the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through team work, dialogue, and interactive media. Dr. Don Williams, Global Learning Research Manager at Microsoft, mentioned in a January 4th, 2010 interview with one of the authors that the classroom of the future is an “agile learning environment” where the students and the professor co-author the teaching/learning process. This experience demonstrates how tackling a relevant case study in a creative way can turn the classroom into an agile learning environment. The students are introduced to the concept of CSR as they wrestle with ethical conundrums in the context of an exemplary waste management company. Students are encouraged to think systemically about the complexities of ethical decision making in ultra-competitive environments. This session leverages case study methodology to improve the learning experience for students who are empowered to engage a successful company and its leadership at a personal level.
